President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan received the delegation of Silk Road Clean Energy Solutions (SiRo), the joint battery company that will power Turkey’s Automobile (TOGG), which is planned to start mass production in the 100th anniversary of the Republic.
According to the statement made by the Ministry of Industry and Technology, the most curious part of TOGG, which was introduced by President Erdoğan on December 27, 2019, and whose factory construction started with a ceremony attended by Erdoğan on July 18, 2020, was the battery.
An important step has been taken to end the curiosity on this subject. SiRo was established to develop energy storage solutions in partnership with TOGG and Farasis Energy for the production of battery modules and packages that will power TOGG.
SiRo will establish a factory next to TOGG’s production center in Gemlik. The Ministry of Industry and Technology signed the 20 GWh battery investment plan and incentive application file of SiRo, which will operate in domestic battery production at the factory.
Industry and Technology Minister Mustafa Varank received TOGG Chairman Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu and Farasis Energy Co-Founder and CTO Keith Kepler. During the meeting, Hisarcıklıoğlu and Kepler signed the investment plan and incentive application file.
During the meeting at the Ministry of Industry and Technology, Deputy Minister of Industry and Technology Fatih Kacır, TOGG Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors Tuncay Özilhan, TOGG Board Member Ahmet Nazif Zorlu, TOGG Senior Manager and SiRo Board Chairman Gürcan Karakaş, SiRo Commercial General Manager Özgür Özel, SiRo Teknik General Manager Stefan Bergold and TOBB Deputy Secretary General Sarp Kalkan were also present.
“We will develop energy storage solutions”
After the meeting, Minister Varank and his entourage went to the Presidential Complex. President Erdoğan received the delegation headed by Minister Varank. During the meeting, the delegation informed President Erdoğan about the investments, especially the studies on the development and production of domestic battery products.
TOGG Chairman of the Board of Directors Hisarcıklıoğlu stated that SiRo was born out of their partnership with Farasis Energy, one of the largest manufacturers in the battery market, to develop energy storage solutions for automotive and non-automotive applications.
Stating that the name SiRo comes from the English language of the historical Silk Road, which connects East and West and plays an important role in the development of civilizations, Hisarcıklıoğlu said, “SiRo is a strategic step that will contribute to the technological transformation of the mobility ecosystem in our country. With SiRo, TOGG’ We will produce battery modules and packages for the flour, and develop energy storage solutions in Turkey and the surrounding countries.” he used his words.
Pointing out that with this initiative, they aim to be a pioneer in increasing Turkey’s energy system efficiency, Hisarcıklıoğlu said, “We aim to reduce foreign dependency in energy and accelerate the development of a clean and efficient energy system.” said.
Farasis Energy Co-Founder Kepler said, “The joint venture we have implemented with TOGG in Turkey is Farasis’ most important partnership abroad in the coming years. Therefore, we will devote all our efforts to the successful growth of this new company.” made its assessment.
Europe’s first born electric SUV
Emerging with the goal of creating a globally competitive automobile brand, where Turkey owns intellectual and industrial property rights, TOGG will be Europe’s first born electric SUV when it comes off the band in the last quarter of 2022.
TOGG will launch 5 different models until 2030. At the first stage, electric, connected and new generation cars with a 51 percent domestic content will be produced in the factory established on an area of 1.2 million square meters in Gemlik.
